Calabria’s “Coast of the Gods” is every bit as breathtaking as you might surmise from its name, boasting spectacular beaches, shimmering coves and quaint little towns. Perched on a cliff with marvelous views of the sea below, Tropea is the unrivaled jewel of the coastline, though its surrounding towns are well worth a visit for some of Italy’s most beautiful secret bays, like the Paradiso del Sub beach at Zambrone.

The Coast of the Gods or Costa Bella is the name with which the southern Tyrrhenian coast was baptized, falling entirely within the province of Vibo Valentia. It is the part of the coast, morphologically varied, delimiting the so-called Horn of Calabria, a stretch approximately 55 km long. Long white beaches succeed jagged rocks with small coves reachable only on foot or by boat.
The Coast is called Beautiful "Bella" for its beautiful landscapes and the nearby Aeolian Islands or "the gods" because it evokes imaginary dreams: a crystal clear sea, a seabed rich in wonderful life forms and white beaches can be admired by tourists.

White sandy beaches, bays, rocks, coves, multi-coloured sea beds, panoramas and sunsets like nowhere else in the world, that will be inextricably tied to memories of a happy holiday spent here.
It is difficult to find the words to describe them, but Giuseppe Berto did manage to do so when he wrote “On clear days you have the Aeolian Islands before you.
Stromboli, Panarea, Salina, Lipari and Vulcano.
If you look out from Capo Vaticano on the last day of April and on the 13th of August, you might just be lucky enough to catch sight of the sun as it drops into the Stromboli’s crater.
Occasionally, as the sun sets in the winter and spring, you can just catch a glimpse of Capo D’Orlando, in far off Sicily.

Also known as the Costa Bella for its vicinity to the Aeolian Islands, the Costa degli Dei is 34.2 miles long and spans the length of the Province of Vibo Valentia on the southern Tyrhennian.
Prized for its gastronomy (its truffle is renowned just about everywhere) and for its position overlooking the lovely Gulf of Sant’Eufemia, Pizzo Calabro is a little fishing village suspended precipitously over the sea.
After a characteristic lunch, make your way to one of the most breathtaking places on the Calabrian coast: Tropea. With its crystalline waters, Caribbean-like sands, and a vista that includes the Aeolians, the essence of Tropea speaks for itself. Certain products – such as its oily fish and red onion, for which an annual fair is held – also speak well of Tropea's reputation.
Ever further south, opposite the mythic Stromboli, is the Promontory of Capo Vaticano, considered to be one of the world’s best beaches.
The seabeds, rich with life, and the bays, like that of Grotticella, are nature’s gifts to Capo Vaticano, and to those that seek it out.

A crystal clear sea surrounds the beautiful Aeolian islands, not far from the coast and therefore clearly visible from the mainland. A divine area which is called the most beautiful coast of Calabria. The stretch includes several towns betweenTropea and Capo Vaticano such as Pizzo Calabro, Vibo Valenti, Joppolo and Nicotera.
The most recommended activity in these areas is definitely snorkelling. There are many tour operators, like tropeasub diving, indeed, which organize whole days off the coast to enjoy beautiful views, take excursions to beaches difficult to reach from the mainland and sea excursions with cylinders or simply with fins and snorkel.
The Coast of the Gods really deserves to be discovered and experienced , where a free and natural territory takes its unique landscape magnificence as its permanent strength.

The most famous onion in all of Italy comes from Tropea and is fittingly named 'cipolla rosa di Tropea' or 'red onion of Tropea'. It's a sweet onion variety and used in many local recipes. The onion even has its own festival which takes place every year on July 27th.
