Located in northern Sardinia, the Maddalena Archipelago is a series of islands and islets that boast some of the Italy’s most heavenly beaches.
With windswept, rugged coastlines made of rose-tinted granite, pristine beaches and translucent turquoise water, the archipelago feels like heaven on earth and has retained much of its natural beauty.
It is best visited by boat which allows you to reach the archipelago’s tiniest coves and beaches.

La Maddalena is a coastal town located in the northern part of Sardinia, in the Olbia-Tempio province of Italy.
It got its name because the water here is so clear and blue, just like the color of Madonna’s mantle. It was formerly called Ilva, Bucina and Fussa by the Romans and renamed Bicinara during the Middle Ages.
In the 16th century, it was named Santa Maria Magdalena and once again changed to the name it is known today.

What to see in one day

Old town centre. The first idea is a pleasant walk along the oldest part of La Maddalena municipality: Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Umberto I and Via XX Settembre are the main areas. The fish market, the marina and the town hall are the places that complete the walk.
Beaches. La Maddalena is also a renowned tourist destination. Especially for a holiday dedicated to sea and relaxation.
Among the most beautiful beaches of the island, we must mention Testa del Polpo and Cala Spalmatore.
Porticciolo di Cala Gavetta. Here, you must stop. Stop and admire one of the most suggestive views that this island can offer you. You will not forget this landscape, we can assure you.
Sobborgo Moneta. You will get lost in the most authentic atmosphere of La Maddalena.
You will discover a dialect, or rather a language that is like a chant and that will enchant you.
Passo della moneta. This is the small bridge that connects La Maddalena to Caprera. It is a six-hundred-meter walk surrounded by the sea: spectacular.

A road runs all around the perimeter: 45 kilometres of breath-taking panoramas.
Granite and porphyry mark out jagged areas, coves, inlets and beaches, while the interior is made of gentle hills.
La Maddalena lends its name to the whole archipelago, of which it is the largest island, and the national park of which it is the administrative centre.

In the translucent seas of the La Maddalena archipelago, you're in another world. It doesn't feel like the Mediterranean here. It feels like a more rugged version of the Caribbean. Suspended between Sardinia and Corsica, this scatter of seven large islands and 55 tiny isolotti has some of the most spectacular beaches in Italy, and some of the cleanest and clearest water.
The archipelago has been well-known to the Costa Smeralda yacht set for a while, who sail out to the heavenly turquoise lagoons like the Porto della Madonna, and the islands' deserted beaches only accessible by boat, and occasionally stop for lunch at one of the islands' waterside trattorias; and there are a few small hotels, pensionis and modest resorts catering to a mainly Italian clientele.
So visitors to La Maddalena will find a certain friendliness and eagerness to please among restaurateurs, shop owners and hoteliers, along with a command of English unusual in Italy, bred by decades of coexistence with the US navy.
What first strikes you about the town of La Maddalena is the feeling it shares with certain other historically significant Mediterranean ports, like Valletta or Mahón, of being a place of transit, its character formed as much by the contacts it has made over the centuries as by the country it happens to be attached to.
But this limbo status is common to the whole archipelago.

Visita all’Isola La Maddalena: traghetti partono ogni giorno da Palau.
