Rome is without doubt one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Home to some of the globe’s most historic and emblematic monuments, it comes as no surprise that over 9 million people flock to the Italian capital, year after year, to get a taste of this age-old city steeped in culture and history.
As a consequence of this worldwide adoration and fascination, Rome happens to be one of Europe’s most expensive cities to visit!
Backpackers and budget travellers intentionally avoid this town altogether, but little do they know that there is a ton to do here, even with a few euros.
So if you’re interested in travelling to Rome and experiencing its magnificence without selling a kidney, then read on for we have curated a list of things you can do in Rome on a budget!
Rome is a city like no other. The city is full of history, culture, ruins, beauty, and of course delicious Italian food. It’s no wonder, Italy’s capital is one of the most visited cities in the world.
Due to Rome’s popularity, it can be quite expensive to visit, especially for budget travelers.
With millions of visitors filling its world-famous cobbled streets every year, prices for hotels, tours and restaurants are often at a premium and you may think there is no other way to visit Rome than just accepting to go bankrupt in the process.
However, traveling to Rome does not have to be hard on the budget.
With some planning and the right tips, it is very possible to enjoy Rome on a shoestring.
One of the best things about Rome is that is an open-air museum.
You can just walk around the city and see stunning art, fountains, sculptures and ancient Roman buildings, and much more, for free.
Not to mention how many churches in Rome are works of art in their own right, plus some of the art inside (Raphael, Bernini, Caravaggio and Michelangelo works can be found in churches all over Rome. For free.)
Experience the Magic at Trevi Fountain Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona Rome on a budget
A trip to Rome is truly incomplete without paying a visit to the famous Trevi Fountain. Perhaps one of the most cliched things to do is to throw a coin into the fountain, but hey - it’s fun and more importantly free (unless you count the coin of course).
Explore the Pantheon Rome on a budget
As mentioned above, Rome is known world over for its extensive collection of ancient buildings and monuments, like the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, Roman Forum etc. The Pantheon is one as well, but for a reason not owing to its beauty, it remains somewhat lesser-known.
Rent a Rowboat in Villa Borghese
Villa Borghese is one of the largest public parks in Rome and is the perfect place to relax, unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist-ridden city centre.
Be Aware of Things You Think Should Not Cost a Lot But Do
SITTING DOWN AT A BAR/CAFE
In many countries, if you get a coffee at a coffee house, and sit down all day and work at your laptop, or just read the paper, you pay exactly the same as if you get your purchase to go, and leave.
In Italy, it doesn’t work that way.
At most bars and caffe’s, especially in the touristic center, if you consume anything at the bar, you will pay bar prices, and when you sit down at a table, you will pay table prices.
TAKING A HORSE AND BUGGY RIDE THROUGH ROME
HAVING YOUR PICTURE TAKEN WITH A CENTURION SOLDIER/GLADIATOR
These guys are not dressed up in lace-up sandals, leather skirts and metal hats just for fun. They expect people to want to have their picture taken with them.
GETTING CRAZY EXPENSIVE DRINKS AT THE FOOD CARTS BY THE SIGHTS
Every time I am walking around Rome with a visitor, and we are near some attraction, there is a food truck/cart....
TAKE YOUR DISCOUNTS
People go online to book Vatican tickets, and just book for the number of people in their group, without booking reduced or even free tickets.
Perhaps it just seems easier, or maybe people don't really notice the fine print, or figure it does not apply to them.
Whether or not you are visiting Rome on a budget, you should take the discounts you are entitled to:
Children 10 and under (accompanied by an adult) ride Rome public transportation for free.
At the Vatican museums, children between and including 6-18 years of age pay a discounted rate, and children under 6 are entitled to free entry.
At the Colosseum, Europeans between 18-25 are entitled to a reduced entry fare, and everyone under 18 is entitled to free entry.
Always check if you are entitled to discounted or free entry, and be prepared to show proof of eligibility (age of children, clergy, journalists etc.)
DON'T Spend Money for Stuff That Should be Free
These are about conveniences. You do not need to pay for these things but if it makes life easier for you, by all means, do so.
But just know you don’t have to shell out money for these things if you don’t want to. And if you are in Rome on a budget, these are some really easy things to avoid:
AVOID BUYING BOTTLED WATER, ESPECIALLY NEAR A TOURIST SITE
You can drink free, clean delicious water all around Rome in the fountains you will see everywhere (not the Bernini fountains; the little ones that look like fire hydrants, or that are in a wall.)
Go in low season (and know when it is)
Traveling in low season is a great way to save money anywhere.
Plan to be in Rome on the first Sunday of the month
On the first Sunday of every month, many Rome museums and attractions are free and this includes some important sites such as the Colosseum, the Roman forum, Castel Sant’Angelo and even Galleria Borghese!
This is a wonderful opportunity to visit some of the most famous Rome sites while saving money and you will find both Romans and tourists making the most of the opportunity.
Book with the attractions directly
Another great way to say money in Rome is to cut agency and tour operators commissions and book tickets from the attraction directly.
Get to know free attractions
Rome has very many free attractions, some expected and some unexpected.
Some of Rome free attraction include:
The Pantheon
Vatican city (St Peter basilica and piazza, not the Vatican museums and the Sistine chapel)
Villa Borghese (park)
Piazza Navona
Trevi Fountain
Spanish Steps
Vittoriano first terrace, Aventino hill and Campidoglio square, all offering incredible and free views of Rome
Stay with nuns
In Rome, there are several religious institutes that offer good quality accommodation at seriously low prices, often located in lovely and central parts of Rome.
Don’t sit at cafe terraces
Stay outside of the center
Another very easy way to save money on accommodation is to stay a little far away from the center.
Drink water from the fountains
Rome has gorgeous, clean, fresh, delicious water so a great way to save money is to bring a refillable water bottle and drink up from Rome’s small fountains.
Order house wine
Beware of the cost of fish
Rome has some nice fish restaurants however, ordering fish can be tricky on a budget due to it pricing.
Embrace buffet lunches
Swap dinner with aperitivo
Embrace pizza al taglio and suppli
Italians do not eat on the go and I have a personal dislike for articles talking about Rome ‘street food’ as Rome does not really do ‘street food’.
Walk everywhere in Rome
Taxis are very expensive in Rome but the good news is you don’t often need them.
Most of Rome main sights are pretty close to each other as you can see in our guide to planning your Rome sightseeing.
Consider the Roma pass and other discount cards
Discount passes and cards can be a good way to save money in many tourist attractions in the city of Rome.
Public Transportation in Rome
Rome has a good public transportation system with buses, trams, and a metro that can get you just about anywhere in Rome.
Get the bus from the airport
HOW TO MOVE IN ROME ?
The metro ticket: there is a possibility to buy day tickets for unlimited rides.
But Rome can be visited for a large part on foot.
Get the subway only in the morning to go to the city and one in the evening to return.
Take a day ticket if you are certain you will take it often, depending on your needs…
Termini Station is the starting point to go anywhere.
Metro line A will take you to the Vatican, the Plaza di Spagna , the Trevi Fountain, the Plaza del Popolo and Piazza della Republica.
Line B will allow you to reach the Colosseum, Circo Massimo.
In fact, in line B, you will find all the ancient part of Rome.
Always ask for a menu with prices
The fastest way to run out of money in Rome is to order without checking the price first.
Street Foods in Rome
Like most places in Italy, panini, pizza, pasta, focaccia and of course aperitivos are the cheapest eats you will find in Rome.
However, Rome also has its fair share of cheap street food.
Don’t expect any healthy options though, as deep fried foods reign supreme in Rome!
Must Eat Street Foods in Rome
Trapizzino, a thick and toasted triangular pocket pizza, sliced opened and filled with hearty Roman dishes like oxtail stew or braised beef.
Cuoppo Napoletano, a paper cone filled with deep fried seafood.
Pizza al taglio, baked square pizzas made on rectangular cast iron trays and sold by the weight.
Zeppole, deep fried dough balls, usually filled with either chocolate, jelly, or cream and topped with powdered sugar.
Porchetta Romana, a deboned, roasted pork stuffed with herbs and traditionally cooked on a spit.
Suppli, deep fried rice balls.
Cheap Places to Stay in Rome Hostels Camping Airbnb
For such an expensive city, Rome surprisingly has a huge number of budget accommodations, even in the city center.
There are a handful of budget accommodations within walking distance from the main train station, Termini.
Budget Tips for Visiting the Colosseum
Free the first Sunday of the month
If you are a European citizen between the ages of 18 – 25, combo price tickets only cost few € with valid ID.
Purchase the Colosseum combo ticket. The ticket is valid for 2 days after first use and gives you access to the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
HOW TO SAVE MONEY VISITING THE VATICAN CITY
One way to visit the Vatican if you are in Rome on a budget is to just visit Saint Peter's Square, and/or St. Peter's Basilica, both of which are free.
On the last Sunday of the month, entry is free (hours are reduced - 9:30 - 14:30, last entry at 12:30.) I usually discourage people from doing this, as the lines are super long, and on this day, you cannot pre-book, and no tours go.
But if you are visiting Rome on a budget, and are here when there is the free Sunday, give it a shot! Just be there by 8am or you risk not getting in.
Attending Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square (Free)
Vatican City holds a Papal Audience every Wednesday.
However, you would need a ticket to see the Papal Audience.
There are two ways to secure tickets:
Book tickets in advance:
You would need to send a fax to the Prefecture of the Papal Household as early as possible
(more info here: https://www.vaticantour.com/images/Vatican_Ticket_request.pdf )
This ensures that you’ll have tickets for your chosen dates.
Get tickets from Swiss Guards:
The day before the Papal Audience, you can get tickets from the Swiss Guards at the Bronze doors.
This is what I did as I didn’t have time to send out a fax.
I was lucky since there were still tickets left, but during peak season tickets run out pretty fast – so it would be better if you would send a fax, especially if this is an important part of your trip.
Come early !
I arrived at around 9:00AM for the 10:00AM mass, and there were so many people already that I had to settle for a seat near the back row.
Dress accordingly.
Remember that you are going to a place of holiness, so make sure you don’t wear sleeveless clothes, short shorts, or flip flops.
St. Peter’s Basilica
No visit to Rome is complete without visiting St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest and probably the most impressive church in the world.
It’s free to visit, however be sure to dress conservatively or risk being denied entry.
Vatican Museum & Sistine Chapel
The Vatican Museum is actually a collection of over 50 museums as well as the Sistine Chapel, and one can easily spend a whole day exploring the exquisite artwork throughout the building.
Piazza Navona
Rome’s liveliest square, which took the unique shape of the ancient Roman stadium it was built over, is lined with outdoor cafes, restaurants, and beautiful houses.
Vittorio Emanuele II Monument
This beautiful, hard to miss white marble monument was constructed to honor the first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, under the unified Italy. Climb up the massive stairway to admire the many statues, to visit the museum inside or to get a great view of the city.
The Trevi Fountain
This massive, building-sized fountain is one of the most famous fountains in the world, and probably the most crowded at all times of the day.
Pantheon
This 2,000 year-old Roman temple is the most preserved building from Ancient Rome.
ROME BY NIGHT
You have to see the Piazza Navona and the Fountain Trevir by night if you have the opportunity.
There are very few tourists and the lights are very beautiful.
It gives a completely different atmosphere than in the daytime.
You can take the opportunity to have a walk and a drink in the small streets around Piazza Navona, it is really lovely.
NIGHTLIFE IN ROME
Clubs and discos are concentrated in the area of Monte Testaccio and Ostiense.
The atmosphere starts to get really festive at midnight.
You can find nightclubs and bars for every taste, and you will have a chance to get surrounded by locals, the Italian way.
