Italy is a country with a long history of traditions and cultural events. Depending on which time of the year you decide to visit and where you are staying, you may have the luck to participate to one of the numerous festivals the country offers. If you’re particularly interested in one of them, you may even decide to organize your entire holiday around it.
Let’s take a look at some of the more curious, famous and interesting sagre, festivals and events in the country.

With cultural, fashion, sport, music events and unparalleled traditions, the new year for Italy looks as if it's going to be full of unmissable events for all tastes. Are you planning your next holiday to Italy?

Many Italian festivals are based on historical events and can include processions with people dressed in period costume, contests between neighborhoods of the town, flag-throwers, food, and fireworks.
Summer is the height of the festival season, as you travel in Italy, look for posters advertising a festa or sagra.

Vinitaly, Verona
In April, wine enthusiasts cannot miss Vinitaly, the historic international wine and spirits exhibition held in Verona.
Exhibitors from Italy and abroad are expected at the Verona tradeshow, with wine tasting, workshops and conferences on made in Italy products.
Many events in the name of wine, art and entertainment are also scheduled downtown.

IGLTA Convention, Milan
Each May, Milan will be holding the IGLTA Convention, a significant international event on LGBTQ+ tourism.
The event is organized by the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association and includes a calendar of meetings for journalists and international tour operators, education and B2B marketplace sessions, as well as occasions for fundraising and networking.

Arena Opera Festival, Verona
If your holidays to Italy will coincide with the summer season, we recommend that you don't miss one of the much awaited dates of the Arena Opera Festival housed in the extraordinary setting of the Verona Arena.
A rich opera calendar is scheduled from June to September with masterpieces like Aida, Turandot, La Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana, but also ballet shows and classical music concerts.

Palio di Siena
If you want to witness something unique in the world, among the must-see events in Italy be sure to mark down the dates of 2 July and 16 August for the traditional Palio di Siena, the horse race among the world’s most famous historic reenactments (dating back to the 1200s).
The race takes place directly in Piazza del Campo, Siena’s most central and scenic square; teams from the different city districts – the contrade – compete for victory.

Umbria Jazz, Perugia
The aficionados of jazz know well that in the summer in Italy there’s just one place to be: Perugia, where every year, in July, Umbria Jazz, the most important Italian jazz event, takes place.
Rich calendar of concerts and international artists.
If you cannot wait until July, you can enjoy Umbria Jazz Winter, from late December to early January, in Orvieto.

Notte della Taranta, Salento
August is the month for one of the most important events in Italy:
Notte della Taranta (Night of Tarantula), a folk music festival dedicated to the revival and promotion of the “pizzica”, the typical dance from Salento, Apulia.
In August, will be held, as always moving about the various squares of Salento area, with its final night in Melpignano and with the participation of internationally renowned artists.

Venice historical regatta
Visiting Venice is always a magical experience, but it is even more magical on the first Sunday of September, on the occasion of the reenactment of the traditional Historical Regatta, much loved by both tourists and Venetian people.
The event is carried out in two stages: the historical boat parade along the Grand Canal and then the competitive regatta.

Barcolana, Trieste
If you are planning a holiday in Italy in October, take the opportunity to attend the Barcolana, the historic international sailing regatta taking place every year in the Gulf of Trieste on the second Sunday of October.
With more than 2,500 participants, it is the world’s largest sailing race.

Arezzo
The Giostra del Saracino (The Joust of the Saracen): it takes place on the first Sunday of September and is probably one of the most beautiful medieval reenactments in the country.
Take a plunge into the atmosphere, sounds and colors of 13th century Italy and watch knights in armor joustling against each other.

Assisi
Calendimaggio (Celebrations for the coming of May): just as the Sagra del Mandorlo in Fiore of Agrigento, the Calendimaggio, which takes place on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday after the 1st of May, is a celebration of Spring and of the rebirth of nature after Winter.
The origins of the festival are to be found in the ancient pagan rituals of the people of Umbria, embraced by the Romans first, and then kept alive, although with a less spiritual connotation, in medieval times. The Calendimaggio became the occasion for the two main factions of the town to fight playfully against each other, a tradition that continues today through the Palio.

Ascoli Piceno
Torneo della Quintana (Joust of the Quintana): the Joust of the Quintana takes place on the first Sunday of August in Ascoli Piceno. It is an amazing reenactment of 15th century’s joustling contexts, characterized by beautiful costumes.

Asti
Palio: the Palio takes place in the area of San Secondo, every 2nd of May.
It is a traditional, 700 year-old ceremony that culminates in a procession of hundreds of people in 13th century costumes.
During the day, flag throwers perform in the streets of the city, too.
The celebrations double on the third Sunday of September, when Asti celebrates another traditional Festival, with more than 800 performers, all in costumes.

Bari
Sagra di San Nicola: the month of May is traditionally dedicated in Bari to Saint Nicholas, its patron saint.
Celebrations usually last for more than two weeks, and revolve around exhibitions, pilgrimages and events full of religious spirit and lore.

Firenze
Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart): this typically florentine celebration takes place on Easter Sunday, each year.
A pyramid of fireworks in the Cathedral Square is set off by a mechanical dove driven from the Altar during High Mass.

Foligno
Giostra della Quintana (Joust of the Quintana): revival of a 17th century joust with 600 knights in costume, followed by a historical procession that takes place on the second Sunday of September each year in Foligno, a quaint town in Umbria.

Genova
Palio Marinaro dei Rioni (Palio di San Pietro): at the end of June each year (on the 29th, or on the closest Sunday to that date), Genoa celebrates her tradition and history with a marine tournament where each “rione“, borough, of the city faces the other to obtain the crown of victory.
The challenge is all the more fascinating because traditional boats are used and many events in traditional Renaissance costumes take place on land.

Genzano
Infiorata di Genzano: infiorate are a typical event in Italy, a land where beautiful flowers abound and their growth is, in fact, a main source of pride and income.
The Infiorata di Genzano, near Rome, takes place each year for the Corpus Domini, a traditional Catholic Feast towards the end of June. Literally, infiorate are paintings made with flowers and petals and real artists participate to their preparation.
The Infiorata di Genzano has been going on for more than 200 years and is one of the best known in the country. These beautiful works of art serve as background and surrounding to the Corpus Domini procession.
