Opera Festival will be set in the enchanting natural scenery of the Boboli Gardens within the Pitti Palace in Florence, and in the sumptuous Medicean Villa of Cafaggiolo, in Barberino di Mugello, in the period between June and August 2006.
The monumental park of Boboli is the perfect continuation of the Pitti Palace and the courtyard built by Ammannati, and is probably the greatest example in the world of an Italian garden. It is of no wonder that the gardens are generally considered to be a true open-air museum of extraordinary scenic effect. The Villa, once the Medici families favourite summer residence, is, with its wonderful park, a natural setting of extraordinary value where to enjoy great music.
The Opera Festival 2006 programme schedules two of the most famous operas in the world, Carmen by G. Bizet and La Traviata by G. Verdi, presented for this occasion in two new fancy productions, and various symphonic concerts, including the choral-symphonic concert of great impact Carmina Burana, by C. Orff, and the Vivaldi's masterpiece Le Stagioni. In addition to its own productions, Opera Festival will once more host some very prestigious events.
Boboli Gardens (Palazzo Pitti )- Firenze
The Pitti Palace was designed by Brunelleschi, and built in the second half of the 15thc. by the Florentine merchant Luca Pitti. In 1550 it became property of the Medici family, the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, who made it their royal palace for the time of their two-century rule. The
family gave immediate attention to the famous garden. It took a period of four centuries, from the 15thc. to the 19thc., to give the gardens their present form. This monumental park, which covers an area of five hectares, is the perfect continuation of the Pitti Palace and the
courtyard built by Ammannati, and is probably the greatest example in the world of an Italian garden. The Boboli Gardens contain a rare architecturally conceived botanic and works of art, regarded as masterpieces of Architecture and of Sculpture. These artistic treasures range from the Mannerism to the Neoclassical style (e.g. the grotto created by Buontalenti and the Egyptian obelisk from Luxor situated in the centre of the"verzura" amphitheatre). It is of no wonder that the gardens are generally considered to be a true open-air museum of extraordinary scenic effect.
As the Medici family died out, the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens became the seat of the Lorena family dynasty and, later, of the Savoia, during the period of Florence capital city of Italy.
The palace still houses the famous Palatine Gallery, a museum that is second only to the Uffizi Gallery, with its splendid collection opened by Cosimo II, displaying under one roof masterpieces of fine art ranging from the 15th c. to the 18th c.
Medicean Villa - Cafaggiolo - Barberino di Mugello
The term "Cafaggiolo" has ancient origins. In fact, the Longobards used it to indicate a woodland area. The villa, which was built as a fortress with a defensive purpose, became later a farm. During the first half of the 15thc. the ancient castle was transformed into a sumptuous country house by Cosimo the Elder, who entrusted the project to the already famous architecht Michelozzo. The new villa, surrounded by an extensive garden and one of the most beautiful hunting reserves, became the favorite summer residence of the Medici family and in particular of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Here he hosted artists and friends, including Marsilio Ficino and Pico della Mirandola. Next to the castle is the Ceramics Factory, which produced both objects for everyday use and objects of great value. The 18thc. transformations wanted by the prince Marcantonio Borghese partly changed the original look of the villa and of the gardens, which were restructured according to the English style.
