There’s something about Italy that keeps beckoning and calling me back, year after year. Ideally, I’d like to be in my sixties in a house overlooking the Sorrentine Peninsula, lemon trees in the backyard and my sausage dogs running around having the time of their lives.

Since tourism is one of the Italy’s largest industries and a major contributor to the economy, your choice of where to stay in Italy is just about endless.

Consider your personality, budget and the kind of experience you want to have while visiting Italy.
You can even mix and match: stay at hotel in Milan or Rome for a few nights and then rent a villa in Tuscany. Italians are warm, welcoming hosts.

From rustic country houses to sleek urban apartments, there’s a wide variety of accommodation to choose from in Italy.
To narrow down your options, it’s helpful to first understand the different types of typical lodging and their primary benefits.

It pays to book ahead in high season, especially in popular coastal areas in the summer and popular ski resorts in the winter.
In the urban centres you can usually find something if you leave it to luck, though reserving a room is essential during key events (such as the furniture and fashion fairs in Milan) when demand is extremely high.
Accommodation rates can fluctuate enormously depending on the season, with Easter, summer and the Christmas/New Year period being the typical peak tourist times. Seasonality also varies according to location.
Expect to pay top prices in the mountains during the ski season (December to March) or along the coast in summer (July and August).
Conversely, summer in the parched cities can equal low season; in August especially, many city hotels charge as little as half price.

Italy Villa and Apartment Rentals
Renting a villa or apartment is the best way to truly “live like an Italian” when you’re visiting Italy.
This is a great choice for travelers who are a bit more independent and don’t need the hand-holding of a hotel staff or concierge (though many rental agencies and owners are happy to help out with logistics).

Consider a villa rental for longer stays
A villa rental may conjure up visions of antique grandeur, but villa holidays in Italy are super flexible.
They’re usually self-catering, which allows you to save money on eating out in restaurants for every meal.

B&Bs in Italy usually offer an authentic local experience.
B&Bs are a burgeoning sector of the Italian accommodation market and can be found throughout the country in both urban and rural settings.
It is a chance to interact a bit more with the locals, as owners are usually very hands-on and generally live on-site.

A number of historic palaces and buildings have been converted into B&Bs. B&Bs are often cheaper than hotels, so if you are on a budget, this can be a great option. Of course, breakfast is included, as the name indicates and Italians are big on pastries, meats, cheeses and fruit for the morning meal.
Fill up and you won’t be hungry until lunch time.

Pensione in Italy
Know that it’s getting harder to find a “pensionethat type of old-school accommodation where an Italian rents out a couple of rooms in their house for cheap.
Instead, B&Bs tend to be a block of three to ten rooms that strike a balance between the amenities of a hotel (daily cleanings, breakfast) and that type of traditional pensione (often family-run, with an informal touch).

Hotels in Italy - Ostelli per la gioventù

Like any travel destination, hotels in Italy will be assigned a star value to indicate their quality.
However, it’s a good idea to compare the specific amenities along with these star ratings to make sure you’ve found a room to best suit your requirements.
With all of the other cheap accommodation options in Italy, it’s not really necessary to stay at a hostel unless you’re young or traveling alone and want to meet other people, or you just really need to save that extra euros.
If that’s the case, you really need to read our blog on how to travel Italy on a budget.
Ostelli per la gioventù (youth hostels) are run by the Associazione Italiana Alberghi per la Gioventù, affiliated with Hostelling International (www.hihostels.com).
A valid HI card is required in all associated youth hostels in Italy. You can get this in your home country or directly at many hostels.

Affordable hotels in Italy
Cheap hotels in Italy are something you can find in every region at a variety of price points.
One way to find more affordable accommodation is to choose a lesser-known nearby city over a more popular one.
For example, you could choose to stay in the small canal city of Treviso instead of Venice.
Or if you’re on the Amalfi Coast, stay in Sorrento instead of the more popular Salerno. To travel affordably, consider visiting cities and regions that are less famously touristy but equally beautiful.

Agriturismo - Italy Farm holiday

A popular accommodation in Italy is the ‘agriturismo’ or farm holiday, but it’s closer in scope to a bed and breakfast than a working farm experience.
You won’t be expected to milk your cows for breakfast! Staying on a farm in Italy can include outdoor activities, cooking classes, or wine tasting, and accommodations can range from rustic to luxurious.
Live out your bucolic fantasies at one of Italy's growing number of agriturismi (farm stays).
A long-booming industry in Tuscany and Umbria, farm stays are spreading across the country like freshly churned butter.

Convent or Monastery stay
Want to stay in the heart of an italian city and save moneys?
Why not at a convent guest house?
Another off-the-beaten-path way to experience Italian culture while saving money is to stay at a convent or monastery.
They’re usually in beautiful, historic buildings; they can be in the heart of the city center, or out in the countryside; and you can’t get any more tranquil! Just make sure you read carefully. Some stays have curfews or rules (like no drinking or no noise after a certain hour), and they’re certainly not meant for those who want to party it up in their hotel room!

Camping and glamping in Italy
Last, but not least, the rise of agriturismo has had a secondary effect: more great places for camping and glamping.
Thanks to Italy’s warm climate much of the year, this can be an attractive and fresh option to being in a new place.
Pack your camping gear and set out by car or bicycle for a down-to-earth Italian holiday.
There are many resources online that can help you map your perfect Italian camping adventure.

Rifugi Mountain Huts Alps Apennines accommodations
The network of rifugi in the Alps, Apennines and other mountains is usually only open from June to late September.
While some are little more than rudimentary shelters, many rifugi are more like Alpine hostels.
Accommodation is generally in dormitories, but some of the larger rifugi have doubles.
Many rifugi also offer guests hot meals and/or communal cooking facilities.
Though mattresses, blankets and duvets are usually provided, most rifugi will require you to bring your own sleeping bag or travel sheet.

Stay in Italy on a budget
Where to stay in Italy on a budget - Tips for booking hotels when traveling to Italy on a budget:

Convenience is key, If you like booking places that offer easy access to major landmarks on foot, or for places that are crowded, you might also look for accommodation in neighboring towns that are away from the hordes of other visitors.
Mostly eat out in Italy, so don’t tend to choose accommodation with self-catering facilities/kitchens. A small fridge tends to be enough.

While tour packages are a great way to travel for some, if you are looking for a more budget-friendly vacation they may not be your best option.
Traveling on a budget means thinking differently, applying a do-it-yourself mentality.
The first step: avoid the package tour with its baked-in accommodation costs.
Instead, consider booking a day tour for hard-to-reach locations so that you have a flexible schedule for your whole trip.

Whether you’re a city traveler, or more inclined to explore the great outdoors, Italy’s budget accommodation options are abundant it simply requires a little research.
Once you tap into the budget traveler circuit, other travelers you meet will share their stories and tips for great places to stay along the way.
And before you know it, you’ll have an affordable place to stay for every stop on your Italian itinerary.
